Red Houses by Ali Al-Jazeri

Red Houses, 2015

The geometric presentation of a hillside teeming with box-like red houses, built wall to wall, some precariously propped up on stilts, others leaning sideways, speaks volumes about human culture and community in our densely-populated world. How do we manage to coexist in such close quarters? And where does our enduring impulse for beauty, epitomized in these dwellings’ brilliant red roofs and facades, come from? One clue is that this image probably shows the Larung Ngarig Buddhist Academy in Tibet, one of the largest and most influential centers for the study of Tibetan Buddhism in the world.
