Amedeo Modigliani

A lovely young girl is made timeless in this portrait by Modigliani, a master of the human figure. Her elongated features and almond-shaped eyes, classic elements of the artist’s style, are accentuated by the painting’s tall, narrow format. Both medieval art and African masks inspired the artist, influences you can see in the sitter’s saintly calm and the simple geometric planes that form her mask-like face and long, graceful neck. The girl’s dark hair is scored, perhaps with the end of the artist’s brush, creating a palpable texture.
