Boy in a Striped Sweater, 1918

Amedeo Modigliani

This fluid, graceful portrait shows a seemingly shoulderless teenage boy. He sits in his chair with a bit of a swagger, which the artist shows with the tilt of the boy’s body, counterbalanced by the contrasting angle of his nose and turn of his lips. His direct gaze is youthful, with a bit of the attitude you’d expect in someone his age. His outfit — an ill-fitting dark-blue suit, blue-and-white striped sweater, and wide cummerbund look like a restaurant or hotel busboy’s uniform. The artist, short of funds at this point in his life, often used local service workers as models.
