Nude on a Blue Cushion by Amedeo Modigliani

Nude on a Blue Cushion, 1917

Amedeo Modigliani

This image of a woman, reclining in a timeless, voluptuous ease, leans on a sky-blue cushion, which complements the red-brown hues of her skin, hair, and the sketchy, ambiguous background. Her eyes, with irises fully drawn (which Modigliani doesn’t always do in his portraits) look out at us with a come-hither charm; her angular nose has a saucy tilt. She’s fetching yet friendly, her ample breasts both erotic and maternal. The artist has managed to make her an ideal image of the eternal feminine, but also a living, breathing person.
