Tiger in Repose, 1850

Antoine-Louis Barye

A tiger reclines in a rocky landscape, relaxed yet alert. You can almost feel the raw, coiled strength in its powerful body. The artist was known for his ability to depict realistic anatomy, as well as an animal’s frame of mind, through close observation. This tiger is based on animals he saw at the zoo of the Jardin des Plantes in Paris, where he often drew. To create this painting, the artist made a preliminary drawing, then painted over it with a combination of fine strokes and thin washes of paint.
