The luminous face of a woman emerges out of shadows in this portrait. It’s a visage framed by thick dark hair and heavy brows that nearly grow together, Frida Kahlo-style. The subject’s velvety half-closed eyes and full, parted lips seem to invite us closer, yet her pose contradicts the invitation. Her left arm and rounded back are fully lit, but turned away from the camera, while the fingers of her right hand seem to reach tentatively towards us. In their collaboration, the photographer and his model knew just what they wanted to reveal, and to hide.
