Chanon Building, New York by Berenice Abbott

Chanon Building, New York, 1935

Berenice Abbott

It took a daring photographer to position her camera in such a way that she could capture this vertigo-inducing view of New York’s skyscrapers and streets. The vertical lines running down the slope of the roofline in the foreground seem to draw us right to the edge of a skyscraper even taller than the ones below. It’s as if we’re starting to fall as the buildings, with their hundreds of eye-like windows in orderly rows, rush up to meet us. Far below, the urban cliffs of the buildings cast deep, diagonal shadows into the canyon of streets.
