Berenice Abbott

Seventh Avenue gleams like a river, drawing the eye inexorably to the distant New York harbor. The building façades are silhouetted in deep shadows that emphasize their smooth rectangular shapes and crenellated rows of chimneys, squat water towers, and other rooftop structures like an assortment of hats. The photo is shot from above, an angle which, coupled with the low winter sun, transfigures the drab cityscape into a grand thoroughfare lined with sentinel towers, leading to a mysterious faraway vanishing point.
