The Bullion Mine, Virginia City, Nevada by Carleton Watkins

The Bullion Mine, Virginia City, Nevada, 1877

Carleton Watkins

A brightly painted building with a bold stands out against a bleak collection of little houses marching up a barren hillside. The miners in this rugged settlement, assembled in front of the mining office, seem to have taken special care to dress for their portrait, appearing in their best white shirts and black jackets. While three young children appear in the picture, the women of the town are conspicuously absent. With this image, the photographer, seems to emphasize the pride these miners take, but also the vulnerability of this isolated outpost on the western frontier.
