The River Wuppe by Carlo Mense

The River Wuppe, 1913

Carlo Mense

A sailboat on the rippling surface of a river passes through a town, with tall buildings lining the riverbank…or so it seems. This enigmatic painting has recognizable elements — the sun streaming down, the vessel, the water, the land — yet these forms are abstracted into jumbled planes that radiate out from a porthole-like central swirl that affords fleeting glimpses of the shore. The artist sculpts form and plays with surface texture, creating an intriguing composition of undulating color and form.
