Yellow and Blue, 1915

Charles Demuth

Bright yellow daisies stand out like sunbursts against a swirling kaleidoscopic background of blue and white. The artist helped develop a style of painting known as Precisionism, borrowing elements from the Cubists, who deconstructed form into geometric planes, but keeping the subjects recognizable. Here, he combines precise botanical observation with abstraction to create a floral still life that’s magically alive.
