The Portal of Rouen Cathedral in Morning Light by Claude Monet

The Portal of Rouen Cathedral in Morning Light, 1894

Claude Monet

“Everything changes, even stone.” Monet wrote these words in a letter and vividly demonstrated them in paint, conveying a wondrous combination of permanence and change as the sun daily transformed the facade of Rouen Cathedral. In this image, he portrays the cathedral in the soft light of early morning. The richly varied, thickly painted surface of his painting renders the building's encrusted stone surface as if seen through a morning mist. He painted this from across the street, working in an improvised studio in the front room of a dressmaker's shop.
