VideoLatex by Dennis H. Miller

Latex, 2015

Cascading bursts of color, arranged in a map-like design, bloom and flow before our eyes, as if we’re watching an abstract expressionist artist creating with latex paint. Abstract Expressionism was pioneered by Jackson Pollack, and these textured Rorschach splatters, though digital, recall his groundbreaking experiments. But here, the motion allows us an omniscient view, as we zoom out to glimpse the larger composition, then zoom back into the heart of individual colored shapes, even getting close enough to see divots in the textured surface. This combination of appreciating an artwork’s aesthetics while also observing it as an unfolding process is a uniquely digital experience.
