Car and homemade trailer on U.S. 101, 1936

Dorothea Lange

“Old Man Depression sent us out on the road…” reads the mysterious handwritten caption along the bottom of the original photo. It could be a quote the artist pulled from her conversations with her subjects, a middle-aged Wisconsin couple towing their homemade trailer down U.S. Highway 101 near King City, California. The photograph evokes the quintessential restlessness of Depression-era America, when millions of people were forced to leave everything behind to seek their fortunes further west. The woman looks out the passenger-side window, perhaps reflecting on where she’s been — and wondering what’s ahead.
