Eugène Atget

Atget made this timeless image of barren tree trunks near Paris sometime before his death. The long shadows of the tree trunks and the stark lines of their dark branches against the sky were achieved in part by long exposures; this wispy, drawn-out sense of light gives a timeless sense of nostalgia. The wide view suggests open space that may belie the bustling modern city just around the corner. Atget was determined to document all of Paris’ architecture and street corners before they were swallowed up by modernity.
