Eugène Atget

A thunderstorm broods over the façade of the palace of Versailles, its menacing clouds doubled in the glassy surface of a reflecting pool. The mermaids reclining in the water seem oblivious to the imminent drama of the storm. The image’s perspective is remarkable: we’re just above the little pool, perhaps perched on the closer rim as if we might fall in, while the grand vista of the castle stretches out in the distance at the end of a long lane, looking impossibly far away. The artist created a luscious scene, with milky textures with highly saturated shadows and light, especially visible in the reflection of the clouds.
