Lighthouse at Camden by Fitz Henry Lane

Lighthouse at Camden, 1851

Fitz Henry Lane

Rosy rays of sunset light reflecting on glassy water create the calm mood in this scene. The beams of light catch on the lighthouse at right, and the bright backlit sky delineates the edges of the rocks below. The lumber-filled ship, the island and a man rowing a small dinghy off the ship’s stern lie in shadow. This masterful painting depicts Camden Harbor, Maine. The island at right was home to many free African Americans at the time this was painted, just before the Civil War.
