Male Figure in Repose by Gaudenzio Marconi

Male Figure in Repose, 1860

Gaudenzio Marconi

This sepia-toned photograph of a male nude, dramatically posed on a cloth-draped stand, was a study image made for sale to students at a well-known art school in Paris. The subject’s pose makes him look more like a sculpture than a living model, and this is by design. Accomplished artists and students often sketched the human figure from photographs when living models were not available or too expensive. The poses in study images such as this one usually imitated ancient Greek and Roman sculptures.
