Girl in White Kimono by George Hendrik Breitner

Girl in White Kimono, 1894

George Hendrik Breitner

Although this young girl is wearing a sumptuous silk kimono, from Japan, she herself is not Japanese — she’s a 16-year-old Dutch girl who was one of the artist’s favorite models. The artist has captured her in a pensive pose, reclining on a pile of luxurious cushions, but her kimono, with its richly-embroidered design, is the focal point of this work. Japanese decorative art and culture was all the rage in Europe during the time this was painted — it influenced painting, fashion, even interior design. This painting’s style, with its contemplative mood, was inspired by Japanese prints.
