Lady With a Dog by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec

Lady With a Dog, 1891

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec

Seated on a deck chair in a garden, a dignified, matronly woman holds a tiny energetic dog in her ample lap. The woman was a summer neighbor of the artist. He portrays her as a mature soft-featured gentlewoman, dressed in a filmy ruffled blouse cinched over a striped silk skirt with a green belt. Her pale color scheme is set off by the tall picket fence, bent tree trunk, and vivid green grass behind her. The artist was known for his paintings of cabaret dancers and prostitutes in the Parisian underworld — this sensitive portrait shows another side of his art.
