Landscape with Stars, 1905

Henri-Edmond Cross

Galaxies spin in this poetic watercolor depicting a star-streaked sky over a sharply-etched landscape of silhouetted trees and hills. The firmament is formed of long broken brushstrokes in brilliantly contrasting yellow and blue, which makes it seem to vibrate with energy. The land below is delineated with pen and ink, merging into a pale wash, anchoring the composition. The artist combined several genres in this work: the sky evokes a pointillist style, in which artists created scenes from clustered brushstrokes, while the poetic minimal tree-scape recalls the simplicity and balance of Japanese landscape painting.
