The Repast of the Lion by Henri Rousseau

The Repast of the Lion, 1907

Henri Rousseau

A lion feasts on a small furry animal under a rising moon, dwarfed by a jungle of fantastic, oversized tropical plants. A misty blue pervades the background, adding to the mysterious mood. The artist’s sources for his dreamlike scene are a bit of mash-up: he based the exotic vegetation on studies that he made in Paris’s botanical gardens, and adapted the wild beasts from popular ethnographic journals and illustrated children's books.
