The Castle Bay by Herbert G. Ponting

The Castle Bay, 1910

Herbert G. Ponting

This stunning image of a sledge pulled by dogs beneath a towering iceberg is the epitome of the romantic ideal of humans dwarfed by nature. Deep shadows add to this massive formation’s mystery and menace; the man and dogs below appear tiny and vulnerable. Ponting photographed some of the first expeditions to the Antarctic. He preferred to be known as a “camera artist,” though practicing his art required extra men to drag a cumbersome photographic sledge up and down icy mountains.
