Summer Luxuriance by Jac van Looy

Summer Luxuriance, 1890

Jac van Looy

A lavish bed of brilliant, exuberant blue lupine blossoms fills the entire foreground of this painting, waving, undulating and illuminated at center by a flash of sunlight. In contrast, the almost photo-realistic background, with its drab hedge, three hay wagons and the artist’s house — was rendered in a dark, heavy palette with tight, precise strokes. The yellow sky behind the house and the red-orange autumn light give the background an autumnal feel. This composition was likely inspired by Van Gogh’s landscapes.
