Vase of Flowers by Jan van Huysum

Vase of Flowers, 1722

Jan van Huysum

A riotous display of beautiful and exotic flowers is practically bursting free of its terracotta vase. This rich display of roses, anemones, hyacinths, and tulips spans the seasons, yet the artist painted each blossom directly from life, taking several years to capture them all. The flowers, in such abundant bloom, are right at the tipping point after which they will fade; this transient beauty attests both to nature's bounty and its constant change. Although this display appears to be indoors, you can spot butterflies and other insects flying or crawling around it, and drops of water on leaves and shiny petals.
