View of the Bridge and Part of the Town of Cava, Kingdom of Naples, 1785

Jean-Joseph-Xavier Bidauld

Silvery morning light dances across undulating slopes, rendered in soft blues, greens, and browns, and highlighted with autumnal yellows. The artist painted the study for this southern Italian landscape directly from nature, which gives this painting, finished later in his studio, extraordinary freshness and precision. The arches of a pretty little bridge in the foreground are echoed in the arched windows of the terracotta buildings at right. A majestic, craggy mountain in the distance provides angular contrast to the gently sloping foothills in the middle ground and the thick foliage in front.
