The Wounded Foot by Joaquin Sorolla y Bastida

The Wounded Foot, 1909

Joaquin Sorolla y Bastida

The colored reflections of late afternoon light animate this beach scene. We’re drawn both into the vignette itself — the liquid sea, the distant swimmers, and the children on the sand — and to the luxurious texture of the painted surface. The artist calls our attention to the injured foot by painting highlights on the hurt child’s hand, the sand around her foot, and her companion's hat. Sorolla worked on this painting outdoors to capture the momentary effects of light, water, and people in motion. This painting's casual snapshot-like framing creates a sense of immediacy.
