New York City: Bird’s Eye View, 1920

Joaquín Torres-García

We’re looking down onto a dense cityscape of trains, skyscrapers, and bridges, overlaid with colorful shapes, like a wavering reflection on water. Letters and logos suggest billboards and signs; the colorful wash superimposed over this intensely built environment could indicate the constant movement of crowds of people as they navigate through the urban chaos. The artist went to New York to experience the modern city, but it quickly proved to be too much: he reportedly called it, “the city of seven million people — which crushes the artist.”
