New York Street Scene, 1920

Joaquín Torres-García

A tumble of stacked shapes morphs into a 1920’s New York street scene, with billboards and pushcarts loudly hawking their wares (“Ice!” “Soda!”) in a cacophony of painted chaos. Fire escape staircases ascend, at upper right, boxes tumble off a cart, at left, and at center, a bold star logo is superimposed on an official-looking document, which is collaged onto the canvas. Tall buildings behind enclose the scene, giving it a claustrophobic sense of crowding. The Uruguayan artist, Torres-Garcia, had just moved to New York, where he hoped to “take the pulse of the greatest and most modern of cities, New York.”
