Brass Band by John Covert

Brass Band, 1919

John Covert

This abstract assemblage of rough-hewn interlocking shapes in warm rich brown over a velvety black background seems organic, almost alive. However, it’s rigorously and deliberately arranged; critics consider the work an American Modernist classic. The artist constructed this extraordinary collage from rope, nails and oil paint over cardboard. The artist only worked seriously for less than a decade, but he may have been the first American to use non-art materials in his artistic output.
