Cherry Blossoms Against Spring Freshet, 1882

John La Farge

A night-blooming cherry tree with moonlit hills is exquisitely rendered in glass. Through experimentation, the artist invented a method in which milky opalescent glass, like the glass you see here in the hills and sky, could be formed into flat sheets to be used in large windows like this one. The bright red cherries and yellow blossom centers use a shinier glass to contrast with the sky, creating a startling three-dimensionality. This image embodies the dialogue between Japanese and Western art; the artist innovates on a traditional Japanese motif, the blossoming cherry tree, by creating his in glass and adding a stylized border.
