Figure in Hammock, Florida by John Singer Sargent

Figure in Hammock, Florida, 1917

John Singer Sargent

This scene says relaxation, summer, and Florida: a man lies in a hammock reading. The hammock hangs on a porch with graceful white columns, one of which we can see, at left. The straight symmetry of this column contrasts with the wild, curving trees, and its white color with their shadowy lilac-colored trunks. Quiet water ripples nearby, with pleasure boats, a boathouse, and in the far right background, a little domed structure, perhaps a gazebo. The man in the hammock is probably Charles Deering, the artist’s friend and patron, at his home on the Miami River.
