Still Life with Daffodils, 1885

John Singer Sargent

Sargent was best known for his portraits, not his still lifes, and in a way, this appealing arrangement of daffodils on a table could be read as a kind of portrait. The artist moved in upper-class circles, making commissioned portraits of his wealthy, well-dressed patrons in their native habitats: grand sitting rooms, lavishly furnished. Here, his subject, a burnished silver vase filled with daffodils, is accompanied by a set of empty wineglasses, standing on a white tablecloth as if anticipating the charming evening to come. The objects’ arrangement is easy, conversational, yet precise, exuding the kind of effortless grace well-heeled guests would expect when invited to dinner.
