Wave by John Towner

Wave, 2016

A standing wave is a term used in physics, but it could be applied to this image. The eye is drawn to the sharp mountain of a wave at the center of the image, dark at its roots, as if a mysterious body were swimming beneath it, and rolled tightly over at the crest. A delicate frill of foam has begun to spill over the top, down the wave’s steep surface. This central wave exists in a topography of water, punctuated with peaks and valleys like a vast mountain range. The horizon line dissolves into a landscape of white.
