Brooklyn Bridge by Joseph Stella
Brooklyn Bridge by Joseph Stella

Brooklyn Bridge, 1919

Joseph Stella

Light glints off geometric planes of color crisscrossed with an elegant latticework of steel. In this iconic scene of Brooklyn Bridge by night, Stella transforms the bridge into a moving testimonial to the grace and power of America’s modern industrial landscape. He wrote, “Many nights I stood on the bridge — and in the middle alone — lost — a defenseless prey to the surrounding swarming darkness...lights resembling suspended falls of astral bodies...strange moanings of appeal from tugboats...through the infernal recesses below — I felt deeply moved, as if on the threshold of a new religion or in the presence of a new DIVINITY.”
