Shadows on a concrete path create abstract patterns in this image. The dappled light is itself the subject; the setting is deliberately neutral, allowing a theater for the phenomenology of illumination. We’re drawn to the subtle green-yellow and rust-orange on the concrete, and the lines that divide the path’s rectangles, yet they’re only made visually interesting by the play of light and shadow. This path is at the Yale University Art Gallery in New Haven, Connecticut; Lee’s image transforms this mundane subject into a meditation on the act of seeing.
