Katsushika Hokusai

This striking print shows two travelers looking at a waterfall while other travelers rest at a nearby shelter. The waterfall takes up most of the composition, dwarfing the human travelers. In fact, the humans are hard to spot amid the vibrant landscape elements. The falls, trees, and rocks all seem to vibrate with energy. This animation of nature is consistent with the artist’s Shintoist beliefs that the natural world is inhabited by gods and spirits.
