Morning in Beppu, 1928

Kawase Hasui

This artwork captures the moment of dawn: a tranquil sunrise over a quiet harbor, with the celestial bodies of night, a star-like Venus and the crescent moon, still visible. You can see the moon’s reflection amid the dark undulating lines of the gentle swell. This quiet scene’s elegant simplicity was typical of the artist’s work and the style he worked in, called “shin-hanga” (“new woodcut prints.”) His favorite subjects showed peaceful places that in reality would have been an increasingly rare sight in a rapidly urbanizing Japan.
