These two skulls on a deep black background take 17th century Dutch vanitas as their starting point, bringing them into contemporary context. Vanitas were paintings encoded with the symbolism of death or change to remind viewers of their inevitability. Here, the artist overlays the skulls with imagery of mythical scenes of battle that allude to war and unrest between lovers. The scenes recall epic Dutch Old Master art, questioning the correlation between war, beauty, destruction and art itself.
