There is so much going on in this documentary photograph. Where are we? The label tells us this is the South, and there are other clues: the man ascending the staircase follows an arrow pointing to “Colored Admission.” The movie poster at the bottom of the stairs shows this is a cinema, and the blinding sunlight and strong, contrasting shadows give us the time of day: an afternoon matinee. What do you make of the strange disembodied shadow at the bottom of the stairs? It almost looks like the movie-star cowboy tipping his hat — or is it meant as the shadow cast by segregation?
