Couples in Juke Joint, Moore Haven, Fla., 1939

Marion Post Wolcott

Two couples mug for the camera in a juke joint in south central Florida. Historical details, like the Coke bottle, wall sign offering rooms by the “nite” or week, and the odd clock bring this now-lost moment into sharp and jarringly realistic focus. The cheap plywood paneling, the empty liquor bottle on the table, and the way the woman at left gazes off into the distance — each one of these particularities could launch a hundred stories. In images like this, the photographer shows us a slightly less down-and-out view of Depression-era America than other documentarians of the time.
