Still Life with Coffee Pot, 1917

Marthe Donas

This painting is a fascinating blend of voluptuous shapes painted in warm hues, overlaid with lines that delineate additional forms. One of those delicate sketched shapes, at center, might outline the coffee pot of the painting’s title, in pale red... or is the pot the royal blue form, in the left background? The artist sometimes called, “the first woman abstract painter,” was an early pioneer in the Cubist art movement, in which artists explored the idea of moving around an object in order to see it from different points of view. Perhaps all of the suggestions of a coffee pot are in fact the same pot, shown at different moments, from different angles?
