Dappled sunlight plays across the objects arranged on a windowsill and a table nearby: two plaster casts of feet, potted plants, an open sketchbook. These domestic objects suggest a quiet, contemplative studio interior. Outside the open window, another kind of scene unfolds: a busy harbor with several tall-masted ships, their intricate rigging reflected in the filigree bars of the gilded birdcage suspended inside the window. This visual echo tying the outdoor to indoor scene is repeated in affinities between the vertical bars of the decorative fence beyond the windowsill and the hanging tassels of the window sash inside.
