Great Organ Cactus Hedge by Mayo & Weed

Great Organ Cactus Hedge, 1898

Mayo & Weed

A mustachioed gentleman in a dapper suit, his hat at a jaunty angle, stands precariously close to a forbidding cactus hedge. He seems overdressed for the setting, a dusty dirt carriage road and the menacing cactus wall. A typical vacation photograph, it shows off the local sights while also presenting the real subject: the vacationer, looking good, on an exotic holiday. Photographer duo Mayo & Weed made this image while employed by a tour company to take souvenir photos, like this one during trips to “Old Mexico” as personal keepsakes for customers.
