Is this a close-up of an Abstract Expressionist painting? A work encasing objects in dense cocoons of latex or wax? Layer upon layer of artist’s materials that mimics a tide pool at low tide? We’re actually looking at sediment deposits within a vast canyon system called Valles Marineris that runs along the Martian equator. It’s almost four times deeper than the Grand Canyon. The deposits create contrasting areas of dark and light color, convex and concave formations, and a fascinating array of patterns and textures that rivals anything an artist could conceive of.
