Russell Crater Dunes, 2016

Tendrils dangle gracefully over a frilled edge, like the delicate gills of a jellyfish. This could be a photograph by Edward Weston, who’s known for his close-ups of seashells and vegetables, bringing out the rich textures of their sculpture-like forms. But this lustrous image is in fact a section of the Russell Crater dune field on the surface of Mars, with just a few patches left of the bright seasonal ice.
