Steep Slope in Eastern Noctis Labyrinthus, 2016

NASA

This satellite photograph is from Noctis Labyrinthus, “the labyrinth of the night”, a maze-like system of deep, steep-walled valleys on Mars. The silken ridges look like the skin of an exotic reptile or pachyderm. Overall, the pattern has a rhythm and symmetry, but just enough variation to mimic the combination of intentionality and chance that an abstract artist might use to make a similar image in paint.
