The delicate beauty of these stripes, dots and layered patterns could be an extreme close-up of a butterfly’s wing, or the inner surface of an exotic shell. An artist creating this pattern might have drawn charcoal strokes on a painted canvas. These features are in fact part of one of Mars’ polar ice caps, which is made up of carbon dioxide frost. When this frost “sublimates”, or changes from solid directly to gas without going through a liquid phase, it leaves amazing patterns.
