Blossoming Cherry on a Moonlit Night by Ohara Koson

Blossoming Cherry on a Moonlit Night, 1932

Ohara Koson

In this print, the artist depicts a blossoming tree under the brilliant light of a full moon, harnessing an atmospheric quality that captures the mood of a particular kind of moonlit night. This delicate and dreamy moonlit scene is stunning in and of itself, but it also represents innovation, migration and mastery. The artist is known for a 20th-century revival of interest in “aizuri-e,” the technique of printing in all-blue ink. The particular blue pigment, “Prussian blue,” was first synthesized by German paint producers and imported to Japan in the 1820s.
