Waterhen and Iris, 1926

Ohara Koson

This subtly shaded image, showing a larger-than-life iris towering over a pair of bright-eyed birds has a grace and elegance often associated with Japanese prints. The artist, Koson, was part of the Shin hanga, or “new print” movement, which combined modern design with traditional subjects. Throughout history, Japanese artists have been inspired by nature, meditating on the fleeting beauty of seasonal changes. This quiet image continues that tradition.
